Key players: Foshan Railway Investment and Construction Group is the developer. The system will be operated by Guangzhou Metro. Guangfo Rail Transit, Foshan Shunde District Rail Transit Investment, and Guangdong Shunguang Rail Transit are the other key players in the project.

 

Project description: Expansion of Foshan Metro, which is a rapid train system in Foshan in Guangdong province.

 

Background: Line 1 (Guangfo Line) has been operational since November 2010. It spans 39.6 km and covers 25 stations. The construction on Line 1 began in 2002.

 

The National Development and Reform Commission issued the "Near-Term Construction Plan for Urban Rail Transport in Foshan City (2011–2018)" in September 2012, which included the first phase of development of Lines 2 and 3.

 

The "Foshan Urban Rail Transit Phase II Construction Plan (2021–2026)" was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in January 2021, which included the development of the first phase of Lines 4 and 11, and the second phase of Line 2.

 

Ridership: The daily ridership in 2017 on Line 1 was 293,370 passengers.

 

Power supply: Power is sourced through overhead lines (1,500 V DC).

 

Expansion: The following routes are under development:

 

-Line 1 Extension (Phase III) will span 7.2 km from Lecong to Lanshi and will cover six stations.

 

-Line 2 (Phase I) will span 32.3 km from Nanzhuang to Guangzhou South Railway Station and cover 17 stations. The line is currently under construction and is expected to open by the end of 2021.

 

-Line 2 Extension (Phase II) will span 23.5 km from Xi'an to Green Fields and cover 10 stations.   

 

-Line 3 (Phase I) will span 60.2 km and cover 33 stations. The line is currently under construction and is expected to open by the end of 2022.

 

-Line 3 Northern Extension will span 5.1 km from the College of Science and Technology to Shishan and cover two stations. The line is currently under construction and is expected to open by the end of 2022.

 

-Line 3 (Adjustment segment) will span 1.2 km from Fengsha to Shunde University and cover one station. The line is currently under construction and is expected to open by the end of 2022.

 

-Guangzhou Line 7 (West Extension)/ Guangfo Line is a connecting line between Foshan Metro and Guangzhou Metro. The line will span 13.3 km from Guangzhou South Railway Station to Midea Avenue and cover eight stations. It is expected to open by 2021.

 

-Line 4 (Phase I) will span 56 km from Times City to Gangkou Road and cover 33 stations. A fleet of Type B six-car trains with a maximum speed of 100 km/hr will be deployed on the line. The estimated investment in the line is CNY44.601 billion. Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2027.

 

-Line 6 (Phase I) is a proposed line between Xincheng East and Shiweitang which will span 33.1 km and cover 20 stations.

 

-Line 9 (Phase I) is a proposed line between Ronggui and Magang which will span 12.3 km and cover 10 stations.

 

-Line 11 (Phase I) will span 41.3 km from Rongqi Ferry to Hedong East and cover 18 stations.

 

-Line 11 Ronggui Duan Extension is a proposed line between Xijiao and Rongqi Ferry which will span 5 km and cover three stations.

 

-Line 13 (Phase I) is a proposed line between Ronggui and Yongfeng which will span 14.5 km and cover 12 stations.

 

-Line 16 (Phase I) is a proposed line between Dongping and Jun'an.

 

Line 3 and Guangzhou Metro Line 7 will be integrated with the Beijing–Guangzhou High-speed Railway. Guangzhou Metro Line 7 will also have integration with Nanhai Tram Line 1.

Recent developments:

·                In October 2021, the Foshan Municipal Ecological Environment Bureau approved the environment impact assessment (EIA) of Line 4 (Phase I).

·                In August 2021, Line 2 (Phase I) entered the commissioning stage. The project will undergo joint debugging and a joint test for the entire integrated system.
