1,000 Global Rail Projects Database

Global Mass Transit Research has released the 1,000 Global Rail Projects Report in June 2019, which tracks 1,000 new and upcoming rail projects in 96 countries. The report comprises a PPT (converted to PDF document) and an MS Excel database.

Some of the key highlights from the database are:

  • This report covers 1,000 upcoming rail projects with a total network of around 44,000 km in 96 countries.
  • These projects will require an estimated investment of around USD1,800 billion.
  • The maximum opportunity is in Asia Pacific, followed by the Middle East and Africa, and Europe.
  • With majority of the projects at the planning stage, there is a huge opportunity for consultants, EPC contractors, vendors, rolling stock suppliers, fare system technology providers, and signalling system providers.
  • Rolling stock contracts valued between USD202 billion and USD338 billion are yet to be awarded.

The PPT provides an analysis of the opportunities in terms of geographic region, development stage (planned, in procurement, or under construction), mode (light rail, tram, monorail, automated people mover, metrorail, subway, rapid transit, airport rail link, commuter rail, passenger rail), and type of project (new line of an existing system, extension of existing line, or new system). The database is organised into five regions: North America, Latin America, Asia, Europe, and Middle East and Africa.

The MS Excel database provides detailed and up-to-date information on each project. Each profile includes information on:

- Developer/operator
- Expected opening
- Capital cost
- Sources of funds
- Key contractors
- Line length
- Route
- Stations
- Connections with other public transport modes
- Expected ridership
- Planned service frequency
- Planned fare system
- Planned rolling stock,
- Track and power

There are separate Excel workbooks for each of the five geographic regions.
